The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) is the federally designated metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for metropolitan Washington. Working with local, state, regional, and federal partners, the TPB coordinates future plans, provides data and analysis to decision makers, and coordinates regional programs to advance safety, land-use coordination, and more. The TPB is housed at and staffed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).

MPOs like the TPB are federally required to produce certain documents. A long-range transportation plan, the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP).

Monthly TPB Meetings
The TPB meets once a month, typically on the third Wednesday of the month. The board takes action on key items, like approving transportation plans or funding for planning studies or improvements. The board also receives briefings on studies, reports, and projects going on in the region.

Planning Areas
