COG's Podcast: Think Regionally

COG's podcast, Think Regionally, raises awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focuses on solutions. The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Karen Lewis Young Elected Chairwoman of Board of Directors of the Council of Governments

    At its January 2013 meeting, the COG Board elected City of Frederick Alderman Karen Lewis Young as its Chairwoman for 2013. Young is the first Frederick City or County official to lead the Council of Governments. “I look forward to working closely with my colleagues on both sides of the Potomac on crucial, regional issues that know no boundaries, like the economy, transportation, energy, and the environment,” she said.     Alice Rivlin discusses “fiscal cliff” & metro Washington’s long-term economic outlook

    Alice Rivlin a senior economist at the Brookings Institution and an expert on the federal budget said she believes the President and Congress will reach an agreement to avoid the mandatory tax and spending cuts known as the Fiscal Cliff. Speaking recently at COG’s Annual Meeting Rivlin called the budgetary predicament a major but also “artificial elementary” problem about which we should all be outraged.

    Worsening Congestion Expected to Reduce Access to Jobs For Some, Not Others

    A recent Transportation Planning Board analysis that shows worsening congestion on the region's roadways and transit systems through 2040 also predicts an overall decline in the average number of jobs that will be reasonably accessible by car, even as more than 1.1 million new jobs are forecast to be added in the region during the period. At the same time, the average number of jobs accessible within a 45-minute trip by transit is expected to grow.
