COG's podcast, Think Regionally, raises awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focuses on solutions. The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Metro DC Prepares for Climate Change

    Today COG is releasing our climate change adaptation report for the Region. Spurred by a technical assistance grant from EPA in 2010 COG began meeting with member jurisdictions to discuss adaptation planning strategies. The report serves to not only identify the direct effects of climate change but also to advance a dialogue for local resiliency plans in the region.

    Fairfax County's Penny Gross Elected President of National Association of Regional Councils Board

    In addition, Arlington County's Walter Tejada was re-elected NARC Board Region III Director, representing the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. NARC serves as the national voice for regionalism by advocating for regional cooperation as the most effective way to address a variety of community planning and development opportunities and issues.

    Solar energy is growing in metropolitan Washington. With over 1600 systems already installed on residential commercial and government buildings the region is on track to meet its goal of encouraging 5000 new renewable energy systems to be installed by 2016. This target was set by the Climate Energy and Environment Committee (CEEPC) at the Council of Governments as part of our 2013-2016 Climate and Energy Action Plan .     Region's Population Still Rising, But Driving Isn't

    Between 2005 and 2011, the Washington region's population swelled by nearly 350,000 people to around 5.1 million -- an increase of 7.3%. But during the same time, total daily driving on area roadways saw almost no change, holding more or less steady at around 110 million vehicle-miles a day.
