The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Regional Environmental Groups Hold First Joint Meeting

    Officials discussed the links between water resources and climate and energy issues at the first joint meeting of the two regional policy committees. Fairfax County Vice Chair Penny Gross and Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner, the Chairs of the two committees, stressed the need for their groups to work together to advance mutual goals, such as energy efficiency and water and electric power resiliency.

    Nine New Projects to Advance Better Coordination of Transportation and Land-Use

    Nine local jurisdictions in the Washington region will receive technical assistance under the Transportation Planning Board's Transportation/Land-Use Connections Program for projects that strive to enable transportation systems and development patterns to support one another more effectively. The TLC Program has, over the years, provided technical assistance for projects that explore everything from ways to promote transit-oriented development to making roadways safer for cyclists and pedestrian​

    Federal Government Leading Continued Growth in Teleworking in the Washington Region

    More of the Washington region's workforce is working from home or from remote work centers than ever before, according to the most recent "State of the Commute" survey conducted by Commuter Connections, a program of the Transportation Planning Board. The survey included telephone interviews with 6,335 residents of the Washington region.

    Number of Area Children in Foster Care Declined 27-Percent Over Last Five Years

    The overall number of area children in foster care has declined according to the COG 2012 Foster Care Annual Report. The report, which was presented at Wednesday’s COG Board meeting, found that in 2012 there were 3,349 children in foster care throughout the region, down from 4,601 in 2008 – a reduction of 27%. This figure outpaces the national rate of children in foster care, which saw a 20% decline between 2007 and 2011.

    Congresswoman Edwards Stresses Development around Metro Stations

    At the July COG Board of Directors meeting, Donna Edwards (D-MD 4th District) stressed that “all Metro stops must be ready to embrace transit-oriented development so we all have a shared equity in where jobs are located.” Transit-oriented development is a centerpiece of the Council’s Region Forward initiative, which works with the area’s cities and counties to encourage concentrating transportation, retail outlets, housing and employment in Activity Centers, instead of encouraging sprawl across​

    Crime Rate Continues Downward Trend in Metropolitan Washington

    Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook, D.C. Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Patrick Burke, and Metro Transit Police Strategic Executive Officer Amy Philips presented the report to the COG Board and noted that the crime rate has dropped from 25.01 crimes per 1,000 persons in 2011 to 23.65 crimes per 1,000 persons in 2012.
