Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    On June 27, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announced Kanti Srikanth as its new director of transportation planning. Srikanth will lead the team of nearly 60 planners, engineers, and other staff who support the ongoing work of the Transportation Planning Board.

    Kanti Srikanth Named Council of Governments' Director of Transportation Planning

    Kanathur N. (Kanti) Srikanth, a well-respected leader in transportation planning with thorough knowledge of the National Capital Region, has been named the Director of Transportation Planning for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG). Srikanth is currently the Director of Transportation Planning for the Northern Virginia District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). He will succeed the late Ronald F. Kirby, one of the region’s leading experts on transportation planning, who served in this position from 1987 to 2013.

    Water Infrastructure Investments Key to Region's Water Quality Goals Health and Prosperity

    During a discussion at the June Council of Governments Board of Directors meeting experts and officials reviewed how investments in the region’s wastewater and stormwater infrastructure have produced significant environmental improvements such as increasing populations of some aquatic plants and animals and fewer harmful algal blooms in the tidal Potomac below Chain Bridge.     Phil Mendelson was first elected to the Council of the District of Columbia in November of 1998 as an At-Large Councilmember. He served the District in that role until June 2012 when following the departure of the previous Council Chairman he was selected by his colleagues to take over that role. In November 2012 District voters elected him as Chairman of the Council. In 2014 Mendelson was elected Chairman of the COG Board of Directors a position he also held in 2004.     Stuart Freudberg Named Council of Governments' Deputy Executive Director

    Stuart Freudberg, a recognized regional leader on the environment, homeland security, and other key issues, has been named Deputy Executive Director of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments by Executive Director Chuck Bean. Freudberg, a 34-year veteran of the nonprofit association of D.C area governments, will oversee various COG departments and offices, including environmental programs, public safety and health, homeland security, finance, and contracts and purchasing.

    The City of Falls Church wants to capitalize on its proximity to Metro by attracting more residential and commercial development along Washington Street, one of the city's two main commercial corridors.     New Federal Program To Increase Mobility for People with Disabilities, Older Adults

    At its meeting today, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) was briefed on the new federal Enhanced Mobility program, which provides funding for accessible transportation projects across the region. “With this money, we’re going to provide more access and mobility to people with disabilities and older adults,” TPB Chairman and College Park City Councilman Patrick Wojahn remarked of the federal grant, formally known as the Section 5310 Enhanced Mobility Program.
