A recent Transportation Planning Board (TPB) analysis looked at trends in how people in the region travel, including riding Metro and transit, bicycling, walking, carpooling, and telecommuting. The research found that changing demographics, population growth, expanding non-auto travel options, and good planning are impacting how people get around the region.

In December and January, the TPB endorsed seven initiatives for a better transportation future. This spring, the TPB began a conversation in the region to get people talking about their opinions on the initiatives and how they might imagine the future with them. To get this conversation started, we held 12 public forums reaching almost 300 people throughout the region and online.

Dockless bikeshare increases shared bike use significantly. That was the good news from the May 31 Dockless Bikeshare Workshop. However, free from fixed docking stations, participants learned that dockless bikes don’t respect jurisdictional lines. Inter-jurisdictional coordination and cooperation is essential.

The third annual Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week was held June 2-10, and COG partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Program, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Choose Clean Water Coalition, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Virginia Conservation Network, and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to raise awareness about this valuable environmental and economic resource and recognize the partnerships at all levels that are making Bay restoration possible.
