TPB Community Advisory Committee accepting member applications for 2023-2024

The TPB is currently accepting applications for the 2023-2024 Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC advises the TPB and offers comments to the board reflecting the committee’s diverse viewpoints. Focus areas have included transportation funding, environmental concerns, and emergency preparedness issues. The committee has also identified key opportunities to enhance the TPB’s ongoing public participation activities.

2022 Institute for Regional Excellence celebrates leaders in local government

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Institute for Regional Excellence (IRE) now has a new class of alumni. A cohort of 28 local government managers and executives was recognized on October 20 at a graduation ceremony held at COG’s headquarters. This was the 18th cohort to complete the program since its creation in 2002.

Region surpasses 2020 climate goal

At its October meeting, area leaders on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors were presented today with preliminary results revealing the region has met and surpassed its 2020 climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 percent below 2005 levels. COG staff told the board that emissions decreased at least 24 percent between 2005 and 2020.

TPB Regional Roadway Safety Program supports community-level approaches to reducing traffic injuries and fatalities

The TPB approved and funded a Regional Roadway Safety Program (RRSP) that provides short-term consultant services to TPB member jurisdictions. The RRSP provides consultant assistance up to $60,000 for safety-related studies or planning projects (e.g. road safety audits, crash data analysis) and up to $80,000 for design or preliminary engineering (e.g., road diet design, intersection improvements) that address roadway safety concerns.

September 2022 TPB meeting recap: Bylaws update, U.S. DOT Safe System Approach, regional highway performance and assets targets

At its September meeting, the TPB approved a resolution to update its Bylaws and received a briefing on draft 2022-2025 regional targets for highway systems performance and bridge and pavement highway asset conditions. In addition, the Federal Highway Administration shared an overview of the U.S. DOT’s Safe System approach paradigm.

2022 ozone data shows steady improvement in region's air quality

The metropolitan Washington region experienced just three “code orange” unhealthy air days in 2022, a decrease from eight days in 2021, according to data collected as part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Ozone Season Summary. The newly released data was presented last Wednesday by COG staff to the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC).

COG Board supports effort to improve regional water supply resiliency

The COG Board of Directors pledged its support for a federal feasibility study to identify and analyze water supply alternatives for metropolitan Washington to improve security and resiliency in the region’s water system. This action came after the board was briefed by representatives of area water utilities and local governments during the September COG Board meeting.
