Leaders discussed various efforts to strengthen cooperation, including the development of a strategy to boost exports in the region.

Area officials gathered on November 18 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Transportation Planning Board (TPB). The TPB was created in 1965 by the region's local and state governments to respond to federal highway legislation requiring the establishment of a "continuing, comprehensive and coordinated" transportation planning process in every urbanized area in the country.

With the changing of the seasons, the region’s residents stoke their fireplaces, dust off their space heaters, and break out extension cords and candles for use in Halloween displays. On October 29, the COG Fire Chiefs Committee, comprised of fire officials from across metropolitan Washington, held a press conference where they provided safety tips for avoiding fire disasters this fall and year-round.​

COG honored Wyatt Shields with its 2015 Institute for Regional Excellence Visionary Leadership Award on October 23. Shields, who serves as City Manager of the City of Falls Church, was praised for his accomplishments in the city as well as his commitment to regional partnership during the graduation ceremony of new Certified Public Managers of the institute.

D.C.-area transportation officials’ Street Smart campaign launched a call to action for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to turn up their caution this fall—and especially on November 1 — when they turn back clocks for the end of daylight saving time. Along with the start of the busy holiday season, the fall months bring darker commutes, more traffic, and an increase in crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists on area roadways.
