In recent years, metropolitan Washington’s economy has suffered from the decline in federal spending – the region’s principal economic driver, said Dr. Stephen Fuller, George Mason University (GMU) Center for Regional Analysis Director of Special Projects, during a presentation to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors.

The region will add more than 1.5 million people and 1.1 million jobs over the next 30 years, according to the most recent draft of forecasts jointly developed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) and area governments. The figures show the region’s population will increase from 5.4 million to 6.9 million and jobs will increase from 3.1 million to 4.3 million between now and 2045. The forecasts were presented to area officials at the March COG Board of Directors meeting.

Earlier this year, the Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved nearly $8 million in funding for a slate of 21 projects to address the transportation needs of older adults and persons with disabilities across metropolitan Washington. Guiding grantees through this process is COG Transportation Planner Lynn Winchell-Mendy.

Area transportation companies Yellow Cab Company of D.C. and Royal have added a total of 13 new wheelchair accessible taxis to their fleets, thanks to a grant from the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB). The grant is through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) New Freedom program and is being matched with company contributions and funds from the District of Columbia.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (CUWMA) are moving ahead with new efforts to grow the region’s economy, such as a new partnership to develop a regional export strategy and a task force to expand cooperative work between the region’s academic community and the public sector.

The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) has released the project submissions to be included in the Air Quality Conformity Analysis for the 2016 Amendment of the region's Constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan (CLRP) for a 30-day public comment period, which will close on March 12.

A coalition representing local government, business, and higher education leaders in Greater Washington has been chosen to participate in the Global Cities Initiative, a joint project of the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase. The effort is being coordinated by COG, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
