The update for the region’s long-range transportation plan, Visualize 2045 is reaching an important milestone. At its December meeting, the TPB will take up the Technical Inputs Solicitation and officially kick-off the plan’s development.

The TPB will take up its fourth set of federally required roadway Safety Targets at its December meeting. Since safety was one of the areas the TPB focused on this year, now is a good time to explain what these targets are used for and to take a look at the facts and figures behind them.

The new year presents new opportunities for area residents to get involved at COG with planning for the future of the region. Two committees are recruiting members of the public—the Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee and the Transportation Planning Board’s (TPB) Community Advisory Committee. ​

At its November meeting, the TPB approved changes to the Citizens Advisory Committee to, among other things, change the name to the Community Advisory Committee. The board also approved bike and pedestrian projects in the District of Columbia for funding through the transportation alternatives set aside program and set Transit Safety Targets for the region as part of the federally required Performance Based Planning and Programming.

The TPB has approved more than $700 thousand in funding for 7 projects in the District of Columbia. The seven recommended projects promote TPB priorities in a variety of ways. They all serve regional Activity Centers (places where you can live, work, play, and access transit), six are in Equity Emphasis Areas (places with high concentrations of low income and minority populations), five support access to transit (directly or indirectly), and one is part of the National Capital Trail Network.

The TPB is currently accepting applications for the Community Advisory Committee (CAC). Formerly known as the Citizens Advisory Committee, the CAC is a group of 24 people from throughout the Washington metropolitan region who represent diverse viewpoints on long-term transportation policy.

Officials and local government experts approved the Metropolitan Washington 2030 Climate and Energy Action Plan today, outlining collaborative actions the region should take to meet its shared climate goals. The plan was developed and approved by the COG Climate, Energy, and Environment Policy Committee (CEEPC).
