A new report on the rate of growth of green building in the region was released yesterday and the numbers are very positive. Focusing on LEED-certified projects Green Building Trends shows that 171 projects amounting to nearly 23 million square feet of green building were constructed in metro Washington from 2003-2009.

This year’s enumeration of the metropolitan Washington region’s homeless population counted 11,988 people, a 2 percent increase from the previous year. The count, which was conducted in the last week of January 2011 by area governments and homeless service providers, found that the number of homeless people in families increased by 6 percent, while homeless single adults decreased by less than 2 percent.

Fresh from his time in the slammer for protesting Congress’ meddling in the District’s budgetary decisions Gray at an Urban Land Institute event on real estate discussed the potential benefits that increasing the amount of housing in the downtown core could have on the city and the region.

Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) added over 8000 members last week thanks to a LivingSocial promotion that slashed membership fees by 51 percent. New CaBi stations are coming to the transit-oriented Rosslyn-Ballston corridor this week and other areas of the region including Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties and Alexandria have expressed interest in bringing CaBi to their jurisdictions.

It seems like this topic used to get less frequent play but the merits and drawbacks of building height limits specifically in D.C. are being discussed yet again. Ryan Avent sparked the discussion yesterday with a proposal for allowing taller buildings in specific districts in exchange for developers/owners paying a one-time fee-per-floor to the city.

Yesterday we commented on the positive impact that the CenterCityDC development could have by bringing jobs housing and more vibrancy to one of the region’s core centers. In all fairness that redevelopment project is an easy one to endorse. The area has been vastly underutilized (a parking lot) for years so almost any development would be better than its current form.
