The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Region to Conduct Annual Count of Homeless Population

    Area governments and homeless service providers will begin conducting the annual enumeration or count of the metropolitan Washington region’s homeless population at area shelters. Some of the street and unsheltered count will take place on Thursday due to forecasted inclement weather.

    Solo Driving to Account for Smaller Share of Commute Trips in 2040

    Between now and 2040, the share of people who drive alone to and from work each day is expected to fall while the share of people who choose to carpool, bicycle, or walk to work will increase, according to the results of the Transportation Planning Board's latest travel forecasts. The share of people who take transit is expected to remain roughly the same.

    COG Strongly Supports FCC Move to Develop Mandatory Rules Governing Support for 9-1-1 Service

    The FCC concluded that the failure of Verizon and other telephone companies to provide sufficient, dependable back-up power and their failure to adequately monitor the transmission networks serving local 9-1-1 call centers was responsible for outages following the derecho storm in June. The report also said the telecommunications carriers had failed to adopt the voluntary actions the agency has recommended for years. (Links to COG and FCC reports included)

    Karen Lewis Young Elected Chairwoman of Board of Directors of the Council of Governments

    At its January 2013 meeting, the COG Board elected City of Frederick Alderman Karen Lewis Young as its Chairwoman for 2013. Young is the first Frederick City or County official to lead the Council of Governments. “I look forward to working closely with my colleagues on both sides of the Potomac on crucial, regional issues that know no boundaries, like the economy, transportation, energy, and the environment,” she said.
