Penny Gross serves on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, representing the Mason District. She is the longest serving member of the COG Board of Directors, and is currently the chairwoman of the Climate, Energy, and Environment Policy Committee, which is responsible for developing the region’s strategy for meeting regional greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Our chief travel forecaster, Ron Milone, gave bike-commuting a try for the first time ever this year. Ron cycled 18 miles from his home in Rockville to our offices near Union Station in DC. At its meeting on Wednesday, May 18, the TPB awarded funding to 8 local projects under its popular Transportation/Land-Use (TLC) Connections program. The board also discussed Maryland’s public-private contract to build the Purple Line, an updated list of priority unfunded bicycle and pedestrian projects, and ways the TPB can support regional coordination during Metro’s upcoming SafeTrack maintenance surges.

The City of Alexandria honored Ron Kirby, the TPB’s former long-time staff director, at a memorial ceremony held on Sunday, May 15. At the gathering, city officials unveiled a plaque honoring Ron’s contributions to the region as head of transportation planning at the TPB and COG from 1987 until his unexpected death in 2013.

State and local elected officials and dignitaries, including members of Congress, mayors, and city councilmembers will show their support for cycling to work on Bike to Work Day by visiting pit stops around the region. Over 15,000 commuters will leave their cars at home for the event, held this Friday, May 20.

At its monthly meeting, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved funding for eight technical assistance projects totaling $420,000, through the Transportation Land-Use Connections Program (TLC) – a TPB program that helps local jurisdictions integrate land-use and transportation planning at the community level.
