The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Commuter Connections program launched CarpoolNow, a new rideshare app that gives commuters in the metropolitan Washington region the ability to carpool on-demand and in real-time, immediately connecting users who are offering a ride with those seeking a ride. It also displays routes, estimates pickup times, and confirms pick-up and drop-off locations.​

A recent TPB traffic analysis showed that September is one of the worst months for traffic in the Washington area. It also showed that “September Shock,” the change from summertime traffic back to business-as-usual commuting, routinely results in jumps in travel delay of 15-45%. The good news for drivers is that the region has many more ways to get around besides driving alone, some of which can help travelers avoid traffic altogether. Car Free Day gives drivers a chance to try other options.​

Next week marks the beginning of what area traffic experts have dubbed “September Shock,” the month-long phenomenon in which traffic delays on the region’s roadways bounce back in a big way from their annual summertime lull. This jump is one of the most predictable and pronounced traffic events of the year, according to a recent analysis by researchers at the TPB.
