Gretchen Goldman is the Chair of the Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee (ACPAC), which provides input on air quality, climate, and energy issues to the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality and Climate, Energy, and Environment Policy committees. Goldman works as a Research Director for the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists. In this Q&A, Goldman discusses her role as ACPAC Chair and how the committee is working to improve regional air quality.

The TPB’s July meeting ran nearly a half-hour over schedule as board members discussed and ultimately voted to accept the recommendations of the TPB’s Long-Range Plan Task Force. The board also set Friday, September 22, as Car Free Day in the Washington region and heard from Virginia Railway Express (VRE) CEO Doug Allen about the commuter railroad’s role in the region over the past 25 years as well as its plans for future growth and expansion.

After a lengthy discussion at its July 19 meeting, the TPB accepted for further study the recommendations of its Long-Range Plan Task Force, a group set up in March to identify a limited set of large-scale transportation and land-use initiatives that could help make significantly greater progress toward achieving long-term regional transportation goals.

At its monthly meeting, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) approved a set of initiatives for further analysis to assess their potential impact on the long-term performance of the region’s transportation system and determine if they make significantly better progress towards achieving regional transportation goals.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, signed an agreement July 18 with COG to begin an approximately $3 million dollar, three-year study on possible ways to address coastal flooding and storm damage across more than 57 square miles in the District of Columbia and surrounding areas of suburban Maryland and northern Virginia.

A native of metropolitan Washington, Chief Tony Rose has served Charles County in a public safety capacity for several decades. As the Chairman of the 9-1-1 Directors Committee at COG, Rose leads local government 9-1-1 directors, state and federal partners, and landline telephone and wireless communication system providers as they work to coordinate 9-1-1 technologies and plans to better serve residents across the entire region.
