An important phase in the development of the region’s Visualize 2045 long-range transportation plan kicked off October 18 with the Transportation Planning Board’s approval of the Technical Inputs Solicitation—a call for area transportation agencies to submit or update all regionally significant projects, programs, and policies they expect to implement between now and 2045.

At its monthly meeting, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) approved updates to four projects in the region’s Constrained Long-Range Transportation Plan (CLRP).

For nearly a decade, home-sharing platforms have enticed an increasing number of property owners to offer short-term rentals. Most of these rentals have operated with little to no oversight or accountability with varying costs and benefits to both the owners and surrounding community. In many parts of metropolitan Washington, language to allow and regulate their use remains under development.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) presented the Climate and Energy Leadership Awards to the Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE), City Blossoms, Inc., and Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School the for their outstanding efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency.

Staff is providing regional datasets, maps, messaging to jurisdictions to support their Amazon efforts.​

By this time next year, approximately 15,000 randomly selected households across the National Capital Region and neighboring jurisdictions will have participated in the TPB’s once-in-a-decade Regional Travel Survey, helping to paint a detailed picture of the daily travel patterns of people who call this region home.

Several TPB staff members, including the TPB News team, will head to Savannah, Georgia, October 17-20 for the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations’ (AMPO) Annual Conference. The four-day gathering will be an opportunity to meet and learn from staff of other MPOs around the country as well as to share highlights from the TPB’s work as part of two expert panel sessions.

Prince George’s County Chief Administrative Officer Nicholas Majett was presented with the 2017 Visionary Leader Award from COGs' Institute for Regional Excellence on October 6. Alexandria City Manager Mark Jinks was honored with the 2017 Inspiring Leader Award.

COG and its water utility partners on the Community Engagement Campaign (CEC) will join the water community in a nationwide invitation to “Imagine a Day without Water” on October 12. This day of education and advocacy led by The Value of Water Campaign is an opportunity to talk about the importance of water infrastructure and emphasize investments needed to grow the economy, create jobs, and ensure resiliency.
