Today, Amazon announced its selection of a site in Northern Virginia for its next headquarters, which will bring more than 25,000 high-paying jobs and billions of dollars in direct investment to the metropolitan Washington region. According to a joint news release by Arlington County and the City of Alexandria, the two jurisdictions are announcing that Amazon will locate in National Landing.

Four bicycle and pedestrian projects in the District of Columbia have received about $1.2 million in funding through the TPB’s Transportation Alternatives program. The four projects connect trails, make it safer for people biking and walking, improve access to jobs, housing, and other opportunities, and overall make a more pleasant experience for people moving through these areas.

In September, Metro and its partner jurisdictions and transit agencies launched the Bus Transformation Project with the goal to create a bold, new vision and a collaborative action plan for the future of bus in the region. The project will explore all factors that influence the quality of bus service, from technology and transit priority, to funding structures, coordination, and service provision roles.​

At its October meeting the board approved Visualize 2045 as the region’s new long-range plan. The approval included four separate actions by the board. First it needed to hear public comments submitted in the official public comment period and the responses to those comments. Second, it had to approve the air quality conformity analysis. Next it needed to approve the plan itself and the six-year transportation improvement program.

The TPB approved Visualize 2045, the long-range transportation plan for the region, which includes 600 highway and transit projects totaling $291 billion; plus seven unfunded initiatives that the region would like to see implemented.

Loudoun County Administrator Tim Hemstreet was presented with the 2018 Visionary Leadership Award from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Institute for Regional Excellence (IRE) on October 12. Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz was honored with the 2018 Inspiring Leader Award.​
