Every year, COG hosts its annual Winter Weather Conference to help the region coordinate and prepare for the winter weather season. COG and its regional partners come together to plan ahead to minimize winter weather-related disruptions that affect the whole community from transportation and public safety to business and the environment.

COG held its biggest event of the year, the Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Luncheon, on December 12 at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center. The event brought together more than 200 area elected officials, and government, business, and nonprofit executives to celebrate regional partnership, make connections, and recognize outstanding leadership.

Six local leaders were recognized by COG at its annual membership meeting for their partnership, collaboration, and service to the metropolitan Washington region. State Senators Brian Feldman and George Barker, State Delegate Marc Korman, former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission Executive Director Kate Mattice, and Leadership Greater Washington received awards.

At its November 2018 meeting, the Climate, Energy, and Climate Policy Committee celebrated the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the National Capital Region Climate Change Report by the COG Board of Directors.

At a work session prior to the November TPB meeting, subject-matter experts from the TPB’s subcommittees presented recommendations for how to implement five of the seven initiatives from Visualize 2045. The specific project, program, and policy recommendations provide a starting point for ways jurisdictions can begin to implement the seven initiatives.

The TPB is looking for new members to serve on its Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC advises the TPB by providing citizen input. In the past, the group has weighed in on specific proposals, asked for certain considerations in the planning process, and advised the board and TPB staff on how to provide better public information on the transportation system and the planning process.

Commuter Connections, the region’s commuter solutions provider, has launched a new and improved Bicycle Route Finder, a web service that makes getting around the metropolitan Washington region on a bicycle easier and more fun.

A COG task force released a report containing seven priority recommendations to improve the quick and safe resolution of traffic incidents regionwide. The Federal Highway Administration estimates 52 to 58 percent of motorist delays nationwide can be attributed to crashes and vehicle breakdowns.
