The federal government requires Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) like the TPB to set highway safety targets, collect and report data about highway safety for the region as part of Performance Based Planning and Programming. As a part of this process the TPB has a chance to look at recent safety trends, assess how the region is doing, and set realistic safety targets. Here’s a little explanation about what is required, how the TPB creates its targets, and the next steps in the process.

TPB staff have reached a milestone by completing data collection for the once-in-a-decade Regional Travel Survey. The survey gathered detailed demographic and travel information over the course of a year from nearly 16,000 households across the region. Since the last survey in 2007/2008, the region’s mobility landscape has transformed with the rise of smartphone apps and other technological changes, which were captured in the survey for the first time with new questions on these emerging trends.​

Local jurisdictions are making progress on addressing the region’s shared housing challenges. Officials gave updates on related efforts in their jurisdictions at the November COG Board of Directors meeting, just two months after the group unanimously passed three regional targets for housing production and affordability and called for contributions at the local level to meet them.

COG presented the 2019 Climate and Energy Leadership Awards to the Prince George’s County Food Composting Program, Anacostia Coordinating Council, and Fairfax County Public Schools for outstanding efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This year’s awards also recognized projects and programs that engage and serve the region’s underserved communities.

At the TPB Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee’s annual Pedestrian Enforcement Workshop on September 27, planners and law enforcement officers from across the region gathered to discuss that third E, enforcement.
