The January TPB meeting introduced Kelly Russell as chair. She led the first meeting of 2020. At the meeting the TPB approved grants to fund transportation services for people with disabilities and approved the membership for the 2020 Citizens Advisory Committee. The board was also briefed on Transit Asset Management targets for the region, the Metropolitan Area Transportation and Operations Coordination program (MATOC), and the TPB’s budget and work program.

What do wheelchair-accessible vans, programs to educate seniors about mobility options, and coordinating teams of volunteer drivers to provide rides for seniors and people with disabilities have in common? They all help connect people to their communities and live healthy and active lives. And, they are examples of the kinds of projects that can receive funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Program.

The TPB approved funding for 24 projects that support mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities across the region. The grants – totaling nearly $9.5 million with matching funds – are provided under the Federal Transit Administration’s Enhanced Mobility Program.

Transportation Land Use Connections (TLC) projects aim to advance regional planning priorities and are showing success in numerous ways. The TLC program provides local jurisdictions with professional consultants to complete small-scale plans and projects that promote mixed-use, walkable communities. Throughout its 13-year history, the TLC program has funded 130 projects in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

COG is pleased to announce that it has selected Thomas Gates as its Deputy Executive Director for Operations and Programs. Gates, an executive with extensive experience in local government, will oversee COG’s Department of Environmental Programs, Department of Homeland Security and Public Safety, Office of Finance and Accounting, and Office of Information Technology. He began his new position today, January 6.

The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) voted at its December meeting to elect its officers for 2020 – City of Frederick Alderman Kelly Russell as TPB Chair and District of Columbia Councilmember Charles Allen and City of Manassas Vice Mayor Pamela Sebesky as TPB Vice Chairs.

According to COG’s latest Regional Air Quality Update, all six pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act—carbon monoxide, lead, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide—are trending downward in the region.

COG held its Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Luncheon December 11, bringing together more than 200 area elected officials, and government, business, and nonprofit executives to celebrate a year of regional collaboration and recognize outstanding individuals and organizations for their leadership and partnership.
