Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Council of Governments, Stakeholders Spur Historic Federal Communications Commission Rule to Ensure Reliable 9-1-1 Service

    Washington, DC – In an historic action advocated by the Council of Governments, its stakeholders and the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) yesterday adopted rules to help ensure that 9-1-1 calls across the nation are delivered during disasters. The action followed regional studies documenting the significant loss of 9-1-1 service in Northern Virginia during the June 2012 Derecho storm.

    Mary Hynes Wins COG's Scull Award for Regional Leadership; The Community Foundation Wins Regional Partnership Award

    At its Annual Membership and Awards Luncheon, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), a nonprofit association of over 300 area elected officials, presented Arlington County Board Member Mary Hynes with the organization’s highest honor. Hynes received COG’s Elizabeth and David Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award for her leadership at the regional level, including her service as Chairman of the COG Region Forward Coalition and her work on the Metro Board of Directors.

    Looking for a civic-minded New Year’s resolution? How about getting involved in transportation air quality or climate and energy planning in the D.C. region? Two public advisory committees housed at the Council of Governments are recruiting new members—the Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee (ACPAC) and the Transportation Planning Board’s Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC). In addition COG’s Climate Energy and Environment Policy Committee (CEEPC) is recruiting new stakeholder members.

    Non-elected government officials will be eligible for this award, such as city and county managers and department directors. Winners will be judged on their commitment to working with other leaders and stakeholders to solve problems and make this region a better place.

    Building Consensus and Moving Forward on the Regional Transportation Priorities

    In recent weeks, dozens of Transportation Planning Board stakeholders have convened to work toward building consensus on the Regional Transportation Priorities Plan, a major TPB effort to identify the region's top transportation priorities. Until recently, that effort had been led by Ron Kirby, the TPB's director of transportation planning, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on November 11.     City and County Managers Share Ideas at First Regional Retreat

    The region’s Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and Deputy CAOs met for a first-of-its-kind retreat to strengthen partnerships across area jurisdictions. Prince William County Executive and CAO Chairwoman Melissa Peacor emceed the meeting. Leadership coach and author Dr. Bob Rosen gave a keynote speech.​
