Atlanta has Livable Centers. San Francisco has Priority Development Areas. And here in D.C. we have Activity Centers. Different terms similar concepts: places or hubs in large metropolitan areas where future growth is designated encouraged and concentrated.

At its January 2014 meeting, the COG Board of Directors approved Place + Opportunity , a new report that analyzes development opportunities in area business and residential hubs -- known as Activity Centers -- to inform government leaders and stakeholders on place-making decisions.

Today the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors approved Place + Opportunity a report that presents a regional framework to understand common challenges and opportunities among Activity Centers in our region. Examining a cross section of the region’s 141 Activity Centers the Place + Opportunity Project Team conducted detailed analysis of each Center’s market urban form and socioeconomic characteristics to identify six common Activity Center ‘place type​

The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) today elected District of Columbia Council Chairman Phil Mendelson as its 2014 Chairman. The COG Board is comprised of local and state elected officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and is responsible for the regional body’s overall policy and funding decisions.

The City of Takoma Park wants to convert New Hampshire Avenue, a high-speed urban arterial that runs along the city’s eastern boundary, into a multi-way boulevard, featuring wider sidewalks, updated bus stops, safer bicycle lanes, and more street trees. The City hopes that doing so will allow more people, especially residents of nearby neighborhoods, to more safely walk, bike, get to bus stops, and visit local shops along the heavily traveled corridor.

On January 1, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption began its sponsorship of the Wednesday’s Child program to find adoptive homes for children in foster care in the National Capital Region. NBC4 and the Council of Governments will continue to support this program, which features children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted on local news television segments.

Joe Kruger Director for Energy & Environment at the Bipartisan Policy Institute detailed new proposed regulations for coal power plants to the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) at their final meeting in 2014. States including Maryland and Virginia will soon be required by the Environmental Protection Agency to limit greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) on existing power plants EPA will propose the new rule next year.
