Several TPB staff members, including the TPB News team, will head to Savannah, Georgia, October 17-20 for the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations’ (AMPO) Annual Conference. The four-day gathering will be an opportunity to meet and learn from staff of other MPOs around the country as well as to share highlights from the TPB’s work as part of two expert panel sessions.

Prince George’s County Chief Administrative Officer Nicholas Majett was presented with the 2017 Visionary Leader Award from COGs' Institute for Regional Excellence on October 6. Alexandria City Manager Mark Jinks was honored with the 2017 Inspiring Leader Award.

COG and its water utility partners on the Community Engagement Campaign (CEC) will join the water community in a nationwide invitation to “Imagine a Day without Water” on October 12. This day of education and advocacy led by The Value of Water Campaign is an opportunity to talk about the importance of water infrastructure and emphasize investments needed to grow the economy, create jobs, and ensure resiliency.

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe led a joint marketing and trade mission to Canada in September. They were joined by a delegation of area elected officials and leaders from the private and non-profit sectors, which included COG Board of Directors Member Phil Mendelson (District of Columbia Councilmember) and COG Executive Director Chuck Bean.

At the Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee’s (CBPC) 7th Annual Bay and Water Quality Forum at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), the group was presented the results of the latest assessment of efforts to reduce nutrient and sediment pollutants in the Bay and restore its living resources.

At its September 20 meeting, the TPB approved six new projects in Maryland to receive $1.7 million in funding under the federal Transportation Alternatives program. Also known as Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside, this program provides federal capital funding to projects other than traditional highway construction, including bicycle, pedestrian, recreational trail, and Safe Routes to School projects.​

More than 7, 000 people in metropolitan Washington have already pledged to go car-free or car-lite for Car Free Day on September 22 with two days still left to take the pledge for 2017. Car Free Day 2017 has far exceeded last year’s pledge total of 4,497 by more than 50 percent. Commuter Connections is encouraging drivers who have not yet taken the pledge to join the thousands of people in the region who will reduce their carbon footprint on Car Free Day and become eligible to win great prizes.
