Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

Annual count reveals rise in homelessness across Metropolitan Washington

May 15, 2024
A total of 9,774 people are experiencing homelessness in the region in 2024, according to a report by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) highlighting results from the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) count conducted by area jurisdictions and homeless services providers in January 2024. This is a 12 percent increase, or an additional 1,078 people experiencing homelessness, over the 2023 enumeration.

Fire officials and waste haulers across the metropolitan Washington region are imploring residents and businesses to adopt safe battery management practices to prevent fire incidents in the home and within waste and recycling centers. Officials gathered today to raise public awareness on the dangers of improper battery use and disposal, as part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Battery Management Campaign.

Street Smart campaign's virtual reality experience challenges people to handle dangerous driving scenarios

After a significant and deadly surge in 2022, pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities in the metropolitan Washington region began to reverse the trend and decreased by 17% in 2023. Those fatalities represent more than 30% of total traffic deaths. Local and state officials are asking everyone to be alert and obey traffic safety laws to continue this decrease to make our streets safe for everyone.

Water utilities in D.C. region respond to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ruling on PFAS

Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final rule on per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known commonly as PFAS or “forever chemicals”. COG and metropolitan Washington’s water utilities support regulations based on science and research to protect human health. PFAS are persistent in the environment and associated health risks from prolonged exposure have been identified.
