At its July meeting, the TPB approved more than $1.3 million in funding for seven projects through the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program: three in the District of Columbia and four in Maryland. The TA Set-Aside program provides federal funding to smaller scale transportation projects which typically benefit bicycling, pedestrians, trails, and Safe Routes to School projects.

At its July meeting, the TPB approved projects in Maryland and the District of Columbia to receive funding through the Transportation Alternatives Program. The board also approved the projects, inputs, and scope of work for the 2021 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and updates to Visualize 2045 to begin the air quality conformity analysis. Also, at the July meeting the board discussed and ultimately approved MDOT’s request for a TIP amendment for the Nice Bridge replacement.

A survey of area residents conducted in May by COG on behalf of area water and wastewater utilities revealed what they think and believe about their drinking water, utility rates, and how well they connect their own behaviors to drinking water and stream quality.

Area public health, public information, law enforcement, and emergency management officials participated from July 17-20 in Capital Fortitude, a full-scale exercise designed to evaluate how area governments would respond to a biological attack, including their ability to dispense medication quickly.​

Planners assume that on average, a person can be expected to walk about ten minutes to get to a destination like a train station. That’s typically about a half mile in a straight line. A walkshed is the area around a station – or any central destination -- that is reachable on foot for the average person. An analysis of “walksheds” can help us understand the difficulties of walking to and from central points, like transit stations.

It provides information to make decisions related to health, education, housing, transportation, economic development, and other essential areas. Every state and local government in the United States relies on Census data to plan for how to best serve its residents.

At a COG-hosted forum on May 29, grantees were invited to gather and share their ideas and experiences improving transportation for people with limited mobility with each other. The goal of the forum is to showcase the work of the grantees, but also to encourage partnerships and the replication of best practices to benefit the region and spark ideas for future funding applications.
