At the February TPB meeting, the board approved 7 bicycle and pedestrian projects in Virginia to receive funding through the Transportation Alternatives Set-aside Program (TAP) and approved transit asset management targets for the region. Staff briefed the board on some important items up for approval in March, including the Unified Budget and Work Program (UPWP) and the new Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), amendments to Visualize 2045, and the associated air quality conformity analysis​

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges that the region faces. In metropolitan Washington, the transportation sector is contributing a growing share of the region’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recently, the COG Board of Directors recognized a proposal from the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI) as a positive path forward to reducing GHG emissions from transportation.

Have you ever heard us talk about air quality conformity? It’s a bit of transportation jargon that’s incredibly important for our region. But what does it mean? Every time the TPB has a new Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) or an update to its long-range plan, these plans and programs must show that the transportation system meets air quality requirements.

The January TPB meeting introduced Kelly Russell as chair. She led the first meeting of 2020. At the meeting the TPB approved grants to fund transportation services for people with disabilities and approved the membership for the 2020 Citizens Advisory Committee. The board was also briefed on Transit Asset Management targets for the region, the Metropolitan Area Transportation and Operations Coordination program (MATOC), and the TPB’s budget and work program.

They all help connect people to their communities and live healthy and active lives. And, they are examples of the kinds of projects that can receive funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities Program.

The TPB approved funding for 24 projects that support mobility for seniors and individuals with disabilities across the region. The grants – totaling nearly $9.5 million with matching funds – are provided under the Federal Transit Administration’s Enhanced Mobility Program.

Transportation Land Use Connections (TLC) projects aim to advance regional planning priorities and are showing success in numerous ways. The TLC program provides local jurisdictions with professional consultants to complete small-scale plans and projects that promote mixed-use, walkable communities. Throughout its 13-year history, the TLC program has funded 130 projects in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
