Introducing Collaboration in Action, COG's video series hosted by Executive Director Clark Mercer. The series spotlights COG's work with member jurisdictions and private, nonprofit, and civic organizations on a wide variety of programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life for everyone in our DMV region. Come along as Clark takes you behind the scenes of several of our initiatives, spreading the word about the value of regional partnership and highlighting the leaders and experts in our network that are making a positive impact in our communities.

COG Podcast

Prior to Collaboration in Action, COG produced a podcast, Think Regionally, to raise awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focus on solutions. The podcast, which was hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, featured local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

Area leaders discuss crime trends, police coordination

A briefing on the annual Report on Crime and Crime Control at the COG Board of Directors’ November meeting sparked a robust discussion on strategies for ensuring safe communities throughout the region. The crime report, prepared by the COG Police Chiefs Committee and presented to the board by the committee’s chair and City of Laurel Police Chief Russell Hamill, provides an analysis of trends experienced in the metropolitan Washington region throughout 2021.

October 2022 TPB meeting recap: highway systems targets, bus equity analysis, State of the Commute Survey

At its October meeting the TPB approved a resolution to adopt regional 2022=2025 highway systems performance and highway assets (bridge and pavement condition) targets. In addition, board members received updates on the 2022 State of the Commute Survey, the 2022 Bus Equity Update and accompanying webmap tool. The last agenda item was a staff report on the 2024 update to the region’s long-range transportation plan.

Updated transit equity analysis highlights disparity in job access and bus service frequency

The TPB has just released its latest technical memorandum, the 2022 Technical Update: Assessing Distribution of Bus Transit Service for Equity. The purpose of the research and analysis is to understand the differences in ability to reach and use local bus service in the region relative to population characteristics and job type.

TPB Community Advisory Committee accepting member applications for 2023-2024

The TPB is currently accepting applications for the 2023-2024 Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC advises the TPB and offers comments to the board reflecting the committee’s diverse viewpoints. Focus areas have included transportation funding, environmental concerns, and emergency preparedness issues. The committee has also identified key opportunities to enhance the TPB’s ongoing public participation activities.

2022 Institute for Regional Excellence celebrates leaders in local government

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Institute for Regional Excellence (IRE) now has a new class of alumni. A cohort of 28 local government managers and executives was recognized on October 20 at a graduation ceremony held at COG’s headquarters. This was the 18th cohort to complete the program since its creation in 2002.

Region surpasses 2020 climate goal

At its October meeting, area leaders on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors were presented today with preliminary results revealing the region has met and surpassed its 2020 climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 percent below 2005 levels. COG staff told the board that emissions decreased at least 24 percent between 2005 and 2020.

COG presented the 2022 Climate and Energy Leadership Awards to Frederick County for its Power Saving Outreach and Engagement Initiative for Vulnerable Communities Project and the Rise N Shine Foundation Inc. for its “Can We Do Something About Food Waste?” project.

TPB Regional Roadway Safety Program supports community-level approaches to reducing traffic injuries and fatalities

The TPB approved and funded a Regional Roadway Safety Program (RRSP) that provides short-term consultant services to TPB member jurisdictions. The RRSP provides consultant assistance up to $60,000 for safety-related studies or planning projects (e.g. road safety audits, crash data analysis) and up to $80,000 for design or preliminary engineering (e.g., road diet design, intersection improvements) that address roadway safety concerns.
