On Wednesday while most of us were busy prepping for the impending snowstorm and trying to decide the best way to get home some folks in our region were trying to figure out how best to stay warm and dry during the storm. Two COG Housing Planners took part in the annual count of the region’s homeless population. Below is Alicia Lewis’ recount of her day participating in Prince George’s County’s count.

Education and infrastructure were two of the main topics in President Obama’s State of the Union speech last night. Spending a majority of the beginning of his remarks on education Obama called for higher standards for students and teachers and for a much greater focus on math and science education given their applicability in the knowledge economy. With a new report highlighting the country’s very mediocre performance in science the President’s call would be wise to heed.

Yesterday’s Morning Measure focused on the impacts of the collapse (of part) of the housing market on land use in the localities hardest hit by that collapse. In summary while far-flung single-family homes have lost significant value over the past few years housing in compact urban walkable neighborhoods has largely held steady or increased in value.
