COG's podcast, Think Regionally, raises awareness about metropolitan Washington's biggest challenges and focuses on solutions. The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    Public May Be Open to More Tolls on Area Roadways, But New Federal Rules Limit Scope

    A regional network of express toll lanes on area highways -- giving drivers and transit vehicles a way to bypass traffic back-ups in regular lanes, especially during peak hours -- could garner enough public support to be implemented in the Washington region, according to a two-year study by the Transportation Planning Board.

    A new mobile phone app is offering local consumers an easy way to locate places to refill their reusable bottles with free tap water. The “TapIt Metro DC” app is now available for free at the Apple iTunes app store and will be available later this week at the Google Play store or at freetapwater.org. The app identifies participating businesses within the Washington region using a map interface.

    TPB Selects 15 Local Projects to Receive Federal "Transportation Alternatives" Dollars

    Fifteen local transportation projects in the Washington region will receive funding under a new, consolidated federal program aimed at supporting projects that expand travel choices like bicycling and walking, or that make other enhancements like mitigating the environmental impacts of transportation facilities.

    Council of Governments Executive Director Chuck Bean and staff took a tour of regional energy assets in Charles County Maryland in July which highlighted the integration of power sources that keep the lights on in Metropolitan Washington. From a recently installed solar farm to the wind turbine in Newburg the tour showed that energy production in Charles County is also increasingly sustainable.
