The podcast, which is hosted by former Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney, features local government, business, and non-profit leaders talking about a variety of timely topics, including the region's economy, racial equity, transportation, housing, and climate change.

    "Street Smart" Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Campaign to Kick Off Oct. 22

    On Tuesday, October 22, law enforcement personnel, elected leaders, and transportation officials from across the Washington region will gather in Senate Park, just north of the U.S. Capitol building, to kick off the Transportation Planning Board's semi-annual "Street Smart" bicycle and pedestrian safety campaign. In 2012, 70 Washington area cyclists and pedestrians lost their lives in collisions with automobiles, more than a quarter of all traffic-related deaths in the region. Street Smart aims ​

    Mary Hynes was first elected to the County Board in 2007. Prior to that she served for 12 years as an Arlington School Board member. Hynes is also an active leader at the regional level.     With great sadness, the Council of Governments and staff honor the life of Karin Foster, who passed away on September 30. Ms. Foster handled freight-related issues and served as the primary liaison to regional freight stakeholders during her 6-year tenure as a member of the Council's staff. She was a diligent, enthusiastic, and steadfast worker, a highly respected colleague, and a reliable friend.

    On September 27 many of metropolitan Washington’s elected officials business leaders and regional planners got together for a frank conversation about the future of the region’s economy. The full-day dialogue – called “Economy Forward: Shaping the Future of the Region” – was helped by the use of computers and voting key pads to guide the participants as they discussed transportation and land-use needs in localities from Frederick MD to Prince William VA.
