The initial results of the Regional Safety Study are in. People not wearing seat belts was the number one contributing factor in fatal crashes between 2013 and 2017. In fact, 30 percent of fatal crashes in our region involved someone not wearing their seat belt.

The April TPB meeting was held completely virtually due to the COVID-19 precautions. These precautions primarily have required people in the Washington region to practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings. Board members called into the meetings from their homes. At its April meeting, the Transportation Planning Board approved projects for the Transportation Land Use Connections (TLC) Program. This year, there is $857,266 in technical assistance, which will provide support to 15 projects. The TLC Program is entering its 14th year, and this is the largest amount of assistance available and the largest number of projects selected in the program’s history.

The Transportation Planning Board is scheduled to meet virtually at noon on Wednesday, April 15. The official agenda and all meeting materials will be posted the Thursday before the meeting. What is a virtual meeting? TPB members will connect online or over the phone and there will be no in-person meeting. These procedures are in place in response to the COVID-19 situation. Information about how to listen to the live stream will be available on the website and meeting agenda.

TPB staff, just like many other people across the region have been working from home in response to COVID-19. Almost all COG and TPB staff have been teleworking. COG and TPB regularly promotes teleworking and many of us already regularly telework but, practicing social distancing has led us to do our work differently. Instead of canceling the meeting, TPB Chair Kelly Russell approved an unprecedented virtual meeting. Board members called into the meetings from their homes. The meeting was still broadcast on the web along with highlights on twitter.
