The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved its slate of officers for 2024 at its monthly meeting today, electing District of Columbia Councilmember Christina Henderson to serve as TPB Chair. Henderson has served on the TPB since January 2021. She has previously served as TPB Vice Chair and as chair of the TPB’s Access for All Advisory Committee, which advises the TPB on transportation issues, programs, policies, and services important to traditionally underserved communities.
“I’m honored to be elected to serve as chair of the Transportation Planning Board in 2024, particularly as the board continues its significant undertaking of developing Visualize 2050, the update to our region’s transportation plan. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the board as we ensure this plan, and our other actions, guide us closer to achieving our goals of a sustainable and equitable region served by a robust multimodal transportation network,” said Henderson.
Henderson will be joined by Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw and City of Gaithersburg Councilmember Neil Harris, who were elected to serve as Vice-Chairs for the TPB. TPB officers serve one-year terms, running from January 1 to December 31.
The TPB is the federally designated metropolitan planning organization for the region. Working with local, state, regional, and federal partners, the TPB coordinates plans, provides data and analysis to decision makers, and manages regional programs to advance safety, land-use coordination, and more. In order to receive federal funding and approvals, transportation projects and programs must be included in the TPB’s regional plans. The TPB is staffed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).
