A new interactive site is available to explore the two new planning principles adopted by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors and endorsed by the Transportation Planning Board (TPB).

Over the next decade, the region will focus its planning efforts on High Capacity Transit (HCTs) Station Areas, or areas around 225 of the region’s transit stations, and Equity Emphasis Areas (EEAs), approximately 350 census tracts with high concentrations of low-income individuals and communities of color. This effort will create more transit-oriented communities, leveraging the land around transit stations to help achieve interconnected goals in housing, transportation, climate, and equity.

Visitors to the site can explore high-level or jurisdiction-specific data associated with HCTs and EEAs.

The new site includes interactive regional maps of HCTs and EEAs, maps showing HCTs and EEAs in each jurisdiction, data on demographic characteristics of EEAs, forecast growth in HCTs, and much more.

The site and tools available there were created by TPB staff. Through its long-range transportation planning activities, the TPB first identified HCTs and EEAs as opportune places for special planning considerations.
