Registration is now open for the region’s annual
Car Free Day event sponsored by Commuter Connections, a program of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. This year, Commuter Connections has extended the event to two days—Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22— to allow more people to participate and qualify for prize drawings by taking the free pledge to go car free and be counted for helping make the air cleaner and the roads less congested.
That means area commuters, residents, parents, seniors, and students will have back-to-back opportunities to pledge to go car free or car-lite (share a ride with friends, family, or co-workers) on one or both days. Last year, more than 11,000 commuters took the Car Free Day pledge.
“We encourage anyone who travels by car to register at carfreemetrodc.org, drop their keys for a day or two, and be counted among those who want to reduce their carbon footprint and find a healthier, more sustainable way to travel to work, school, the mall—anywhere you need to go,” said Commuter Connections Director Nicholas Ramfos.
Taking the pledge is free, fast, and easy at carfreemetrodc.org. Everyone who pledges to go car free or car-lite on September 21, September 22, or both days will be eligible to win prizes including $25 SmarTrip cards, Giant grocery gift cards, KIND Healthy Snacks gift bags, an Apple iPod, Capital Bikeshare memberships, and more.
