Washington, D.C. (June 13, 2018) – After years of regional collaboration, the Anacostia River received its first “passing grade” on the annual “State of the Anacostia River Report Card.” The report card issued by the Anacostia Watershed Society uses several factors to measure watershed improvements.
The Anacostia Watershed Restoration Partnership, led by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), is a consortium of local, state, and federal agencies, environmental organizations, and private citizens working toward a cleaner, healthier Anacostia watershed.
AWRP Chairman Adam Ortiz, noting the improvements, said:
“For a long time, the Anacostia River has faced water quality challenges. This latest report card shows progress is being made and our communities’ investments are paying off, but it also reminds us that there is more work to be done. Together, we will ensure the Anacostia is once again considered a valuable asset in our region.
The opening of the DC Water tunnel and innovative green infrastructure projects by the District of Columbia, and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are leading to further improvements to the Anacostia River and watershed.
However, it is not just these milestones that make the river and watershed worth celebrating. The Anacostia is also amazing because of its rich history, its diverse communities, its crucial fish and wildlife habitat, and its countless opportunities for recreation, leisure, and adventure.
2018 is the Year of the Anacostia (YOTA). It is the perfect time to #ComeToTheRiver and immerse yourself in this remarkable place. From kayaking and hiking, to dining and sports, there is something for everyone.
I encourage everyone from across metropolitan Washington to come to the river and explore all of the beauty it has to offer.”
