Long-Range Plan Task Force, Car Free Day, and VRE all coming up at the July 19 TPB meeting

Jul 12, 2017

The Transportation Planning Board is scheduled to meet at noon on Wednesday, July 19. The official agenda and all meeting materials will be posted on the Thursday before the meeting. Here’s a quick preview of what’s coming up:

  • Long-Range Plan Task Force recommendations. The task force has completed its work of identifying a limited number of regionally significant transportation and land-use initiatives for the TPB to analyze and assess how well the efforts might make significantly better progress toward achieving regional transportation goals. The aim is for the TPB to use the analysis to identify a limited number of the initiatives to rally support for and eventually include in the region’s long-range transportation plan.
  • Setting Friday, Sept. 22 as Car Free Day. The TPB will make its annual proclamation of September 22 as regional Car Free Day. The event encourages people to try modes of travel other than driving alone, like transit, bicycling, walking, carpooling, vanpooling, and teleworking. The event also aims to encourage the community and decision makers to support car-free policies and initiatives.
  • A visit from Virginia Railway Express (VRE) officials. VRE CEO Doug Allen will highlight the commuter railroad’s role in the region and its plans for future growth and expansion. VRE began service 25 years ago, in June 1992, and has become an integral part of the regional transportation system.
