Assessing Street Tree Populations with i-Tree Tools

Training at Metro Washington COG on November 27, 2007

Description of training:

The i-Tree suite of software tools was developed to help users—regardless of community size or technical capacity—identify and manage the structure, function, and value of urban tree populations. i-Tree allows you to promote effective urban forest management and sound arboricultural practices by providing information for advocacy & planning, baseline data for making informed decisions, and standardization for comparisons with other communities. Better understanding of benefits and services provided by trees increases investment in stewardship, operations, and maintenance.

STRATUM (Street Tree Resource Analysis Tool for Urban forest Managers) utilizes a sample or complete tree inventory to describe tree management needs and quantify the value of annual environmental and aesthetic benefits such as energy conservation, air quality improvement, CO2 reduction, storm water control, and property value increases.

Municipalities in the metro Washington, DC area are seeing the potential benefits of using i-Tree software to quantify the value of their urban forests.  The cities of Baltimore, Hyattsville, and Washington, DC have gained experience implementing STRATUM projects.  This training will provide a forum for the coordinators of these projects (and several others) to share their knowledge with you.

This session is made possible by the support and participation of :
