Big Data for Regional Travel and Mobility Analyses
Sep 24, 2021
Summary
In 2019 and 2020, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) completed a study to evaluate Big Data and its use and limitations in regional travel and mobility analyses and modeling. The evaluation was conducted by an independent consultant under the oversight of the TPB. The consultant was tasked with first developing a firm understanding of TPB requirements and then evaluating myriad Big Data sources for their appropriateness and applicability to addressing those requirements. The evaluation entailed a survey of peer metropolitan planning organization (MPO) agencies, interviews, and a comprehensive analysis of more than 20 Big Data products and how they addressed TPB programmatic needs.
