Bus Lane Enforcement Study
Jun 30, 2017
Summary
The Washington, D.C. region ranks as one of the most congested metropolitan regions in the United States. While all road users experience congestion and travel delays, bus transit service is severely challenged by today’s traffic conditions, and there has been a growing interest in identifying strategies to increase its efficiency and reliability, such as the installation of bus lanes.
The National Capital Regional Transportation Planning Board (TPB), in coordination with WMATA, commissioned the Bus Lane Enforcement Study to research, identify, and develop strategies to improve observance with and enforcement of bus lanes in TPB jurisdictions. The study identified and formulated actions that consisted of physical improvements, law enforcement, education and advertising programs, and legislative initiatives needed to successfully implement bus lanes throughout the region.
