Induced Travel: Definition, Forecasting Process, and A Case Study in the Metropolitan Washington Region

Sep 18, 2001

Summary

The TPB directed staff in 1999 to examine the issue of induced travel. Staff efforts in response to this request included hiring a consultant to conduct an objective review of studies on the issue of induced travel and to assess their validity and relevance for transportation planning in the metropolitan Washington region; developing a multi-jurisdictional working group to further review the consultant's study findings and determine how to best present its policy implications; attending several forums and Transportation Research Board sessions on the issue of induced travel; and conducting a case study using a corridor in the metropolitan Washington region. The product on these efforts is a briefing paper on the issue on induced travel, Induced Travel: Definition, Forecasting Process, and A Case Study in the Metropolitan Washington Region.
