Transportation Safety Subcommittee
Overview
Since 2012, the TPB’s Transportation Safety Subcommittee has served as a forum for local transportation practitioners to exchange best practices, learn about emerging trends and developments in roadway safety, and coordinate on regional roadway safety matters. The Subcommittee additionally advises on the maintenance of the safety element of the constrained long-range transportation plan.
Transportation Safety Subcommittee participants typically include:
- Transportation staff from local jurisdictions in the TPB region (TPB member jurisdictions are featured on the following map)
- Staff from MDOT, VDOT, and DDOT
- COG/TPB transportation planning staff
- Transportation-related consulting firms
Meetings
The Transportation Safety Subcommittee meets bi-monthly, typically on the second Tuesday of the month. Meetings feature presentations on member safety projects and studies; academic research from transportation, public health, and other related fields; as well as TPB presentations on relevant planning activities or programs.
Related Publications and Programs
The Transportation Safety Subcommittee complements several other roadway safety initiatives and activities undertaken by the TPB, in coordination with its state and local partners. These include Street Smart, a regional roadway safety education campaign; the Regional Roadway Safety Program, a regional technical assistance program; the setting of federally mandated annual roadway safety performance targets and evaluation of progress towards those targets; and regional safety data studies.
The TPB’s commitment to preventing roadway fatalities and serious injuries on the region’s roadways in a fair and equitable manner is encapsulated in TPB Resolution R3-2021 (July 22, 2020).
