The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) today elected District of Columbia Council Chairman Phil Mendelson as its 2014 Chairman. The COG Board is comprised of local and state elected officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and is responsible for the regional body’s overall policy and funding decisions.
“I look forward to working with my regional colleagues to further our common goals and interests in moving this region forward,” said Mendelson of his aspirations for 2014. Mendelson, who serves as Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia, was previously the Council of Governments Chairman in 2004.
Prior to his election today as COG Chairman, Mendelson served on and led several COG committees in addition to the Board of Directors, including the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board and the Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee. Mendelson has also served as COG President.
The COG Board also elected its 2014 Vice Chairs— and Bill Euille and Roger Berliner. Euille, a former COG President, is the Mayor of the City of Alexandria. Berliner, Chairman of COG’s Climate, Energy, and Environment Policy Committee (CEEPC), is a Councilmember on the Montgomery County Council, representing the First District.
