Washington, DC – The Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) today elected District of Columbia Councilmember Kwame Brown as its chairman for 2010.  The COG Board is made up of local and state elected officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and is responsible for the regional body’s overall policies, functions, and funds.

Brown has served as an At-Large Councilmember on the Council of the District of Columbia since 2005.  He has also served as Vice Chairman of the COG Board for the past two years.  During this time, Brown and his colleagues on the COG Board have pursued closer ties with the federal government, launched a regional workforce development initiative, and created Region Forward©, a comprehensive, new guide to planning and measuring progress in the 21st Century.

“I look forward to leading the COG Board and building on our recent work to develop more sustainable communities and a more resilient economy for all residents of the National Capital Region,” Brown said.

COG also elected its 2010 vice chairs—Andrea Harrison and Frank Principi.  Harrison has served as the District 5 Council Member on the Prince George's County Council since 2008. She is currently serving as Vice Chair of the County Council.  Principi has served as the Woodbridge District Supervisor on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors since 2008.
