Opportunity to help coordinate a communications program for a nonprofit association of local governments committed to shaping strong communities and a better region. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is seeking applicants for a Communications Associate responsible for sharing news content through COG’s online platforms and working collaboratively with COG’s subject matter experts and officials to create and promote products on a range of topics, including transportation, the environment, and public safety. The position is full-time for a limited tenure of six months beginning in January 2020.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Draft and schedule social media content for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Create and edit content for the web, such as news highlights or blogs.
Update and help organize information on COG’s website. Review and update media and marketing lists.
Review media and other sources for news relevant to COG for tracking and sharing purposes.
Help review, edit, and design presentations, publications, and event materials in collaboration with COG program staff. Share content using email marketing software.
Take photographs at events and meetings
Record and edit short videos (if in associate’s skill set)

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, or related field and some experience in writing and producing publications, journalism, public relations, local, state or federal government, or nonprofit organizations or any equivalent combination of knowledge and training which provides the required knowledge, experience, skills, and abilities.
Computer Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, web content management systems, and social media programs. Familiarity with video production software and Photoshop, a plus. Experience in creating data visualizations, infographics and graphics for the web, a plus.
Communication Skills
Ability to write for public consumption, which may include newsletter articles, reports, blogs, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from officials, senior management staff, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
This job has no mathematical skill requirements.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
