Get Involved

Are you interested in advising area officials on environmental policies? Do you want to learn skills to make you a more effective community leader or government manager? Would you like to better understand how transportation decisions are made in our complex region?

At the Council of Governments, there are a number of opportunities for members of the public and area stakeholders to get involved and help shape a stronger metropolitan Washington region, including serving on an advisory committee, participating in a leadership program, and offering public comment. The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) and Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC) have public comment periods during each meeting. You can also submit written statements to the TPB, MWAQC, or in regards to any relevant draft plans. Public comments are made available to committee members and become part of the permanent record.

A People's Guide to Transportation Decision-Making in the National Capital Region is a great starting point for learning how transportation funding and planning decisions are made in the region. This booklet explains how, where, and by whom transportation decisions are made, the role the TPB plays in coordinating the process, and how community members can participate in the process.
