Stuart Freudberg began his 40-year career at COG in 1980 as an environmental engineer. Six years later, Freudberg was named Director of COG’s Department of Environment Programs. He became Deputy Executive Director in 2014, until his retirement in 2020, overseeing a broad portfolio of programs.
Freudberg liked to say his career at COG had been all about relationships, which allowed him to jump into very different projects. Among his accomplishments, he worked with COG staff and members on regional water supply and drought planning as well as the creation of the Anacostia restoration partnership and COG committees focused on air quality, Chesapeake Bay restoration, and climate change. In addition to environmental initiatives, he also supported emergency preparedness activities following 9/11 as well as Metro funding and safety efforts.
In 2021, COG began presenting its partnership award in Freudberg's memory. The Stuart A. Freudberg Award for Regional Partnership recognizes a nonprofit, private sector organization, philanthropy, foundation, or individual that provided leadership in support of regional policies or programs endorsed by COG.
