History & Regional Awards

Since 1957, the Council of Governments has helped tackle metropolitan Washington’s biggest challenges, such as revitalizing the Potomac River, ensuring the Metro system was fully built, and strengthening emergency preparedness after 9/11. Throughout its history, the COG Board of Directors has been guided by leaders from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. It has also regularly recognized outstanding contributions by area leaders and partners through its Regional Awards.

The following video is a short history of the Council of Governments and the region it serves. It was produced for COG's 50th Anniversary in 2007 and narrated by local broadcast journalist Gordon Peterson.
